Will they succumb to its enticing tether, or fight to resume their loveless lives apart?

My Thoughts: I really enjoy shifter books. I would prefer a good shifter book over a vampire book any day. For that reason alone I was very excited to read Staring Into the Eyes of Chance by Kay Dee Royal.

I loved all the characters that Royal created in this book. Olivia was a widow with a bad marriage in her past. I found her so interesting right from the start. She loved her animals so much and really seemed to want to please people. She definitely couldn't tell her sister no about finding a new love interest. Even though she loves to please others she is one brave woman. The things she threw herself into were just crazy. I wouldn't be searching in the middle of the night by myself after seeing a huge wolf. Her sixth sense just adds even more layers to who she is and will become.

Chance just sounds so gorgeous. He is the Alpha of his pack and, so obviously he is strong. He is also very caring and his sense of humor with his pack is nice. He isn't overbearing with them. I was loving every minute of reading about him.

I loved Chance and Olivia's relationship. Some people don't like that instant love that seems to happen in books. Sometimes it bothers me, too. Not in this book. Royal did such a great job of explaining the reasons behind the attraction. Sure Olivia was beautiful and Chance was handsome but it was something deeper for them. I love their journey, and their love scenes are very steamy.

Lindsey and Trevor's relationship is very interesting. Lindsey is all no-nonsense and standing up to everyone. She tries to protect Olivia from any kind of hurt. She is a perfect best friend. I love Trevor. He is so funny, and the way he talks entertains me. Their relationship hits some serious bumps, so I will be very interested to see how it goes in later books.

The rest of the pack is great. Jasmine is kind of like Lindsey. She doesn't take any crap, she says it like it is, and I don't think I would ever want to fight with her. Dir, Jase, and Damen all got my attention. There is something about Jase, I can't wait to read more about him.

Smoke is a perfect villain. He and his pack cause so much chaos for Olivia and Chance and his pack. I could really hate that wolf. Then every once in a while there was this little glimpse of some humanity. Not much, but enough to make me wonder if he is save-able.

I think that readers should go into this book with a little warning. There are some very explicit scenes in this book, including scenes that may offend some people at times. If you can handle the heat then definitely get this book. I loved every minute, even the rougher scenes, because it all added to the amazing story. I cannot wait for the next book in this amazing series. Kay Dee Royal has major talent.

  1. Hello Melissa,
Thank you for your time and wonderful review. I appreciate that you resonated with Olivia, Chance, Trevor, Lindseay and the rest of the pack. I love that you got them:)
I'm so glad you enjoyed their story...and I'm pushing it to get Book 2 finished...although Smoke is giving me fits. He's adamant about having his time in the good-life, but I'm arguing with him about him making his bed so now he has to lie in it. Do you think he's redeem-able? *smile*

  2. If Olivia's marriage was so terrible, why did she stay for so long? Why not just get out to try to find some happiness? I guess the saying is true, good things comes to those that wait, but better things come to those who are patient. After thirty four years in an unhappy marriage, I'd say Olivia waited and had a ton of patience. This book sounds amazing. Can't wait to read it to see what happens with Olivia, Chance, and of course, Smoke.
